The former governor of Rivers State and current Minister of Transportation. Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, said he did everything possible to make the immediate past president of Nigeria, Dr.Goodluck Jonathan, implement the UNEP report and commence the clean up of Ogoniland, but the former president deliberately refused to act.
He accused the former president of being insensitive and uninterested in issues that tend to end the plight of the Ogoni people and the Niger Delta in general.
The transportation minister made this known while addressing a mammoth crowd at the official flag-off of the implementation of the UNEP report on Ogoniland yesterday, Thursday 2nd Juune 2016 at Bodo City in Gokana L.G.A of Rivers State.
Amaechi said, “We did everything possible as a sitting government to make the president implement the UNEP report, everything. But the report was not implemented after all.”
In his address, the minister noted that the 1 billion dollars clean up exercise would create jobs for the people of the region.
While acknowledging the presence of his successor, the Rivers State governor, Chief (Barr.) Nyesom Wike, Mr. Amaechi thanked the President Muhammedu Buhari -led administration for coming to the aid of the Ogoni people and for fulfilling part of his campaign promises of cleaning up the region.
He noted that President Buhari, though not a biological son of the Niger Delta, has shown greater concern to the plight and problems of the Niger Delta people than former president Jonathan.
